Project Description
Here is a short description of my proposed project:
I want to give one laptop per child to one classroom at Cleveland School in Santa Barbara, California.
Cleveland School runs on a year round calendar. Almost 100% of the students are Hispanic, many with limited English speaking ability.
The main focus of the project is to evaluate the effect of the laptop use on the state test scores. The test examines how well students have learned the concepts embodied in the state standards.
Some of the activities will target specific standards and some will be basic OLPC activities.
I intend to research the different activities native to the sugar os and the olpc goals that might directly help students learn specific standards’ concepts.
I will also look for web sites such as “http://www.internet4classrooms.com/” which has links to activities for each federal standard.
Timeline:
April, May 2011- Use one or two XOs to learn its capabilities and limitations.
May, June 2011- Develop a curriculum guide for the program and train the program teacher.
July 2011 to April 2012- Implement program
April 2011- Evaluate program results

3. Objectives
Project Objectives: (Introduce laptops to Hispanic students with
limited access to computers). Test the use of laptop activities effect
on California standards test scores.
4. Plan of Action
Plan and Procedure for Achieving the Stated Objectives:
Cleveland is on a year round schedule. Will research web sites with
interactive games and activities that reinforce specific standards.
Will write a curriculum and basic use guide. Will demo XO computer to
a classroom teacher. Teacher will introduce the use of the XO during
the summer session starting in July, 2011. I will support the teacher
in implementing the program. We will evaluate score before and after
using the laptops for 1 year.
5. Needs
Students at Cleveland have no technology training and have limited skills
Locally? Enhance technology skills for minority, technology deprived students.
In the greater OLPC/Sugar community? Will take my experience from this
project to then volunteer to introduce laptops to students around the
world. Will also volunteer for teacher training programs around the
world.
Outside the community?
Why can’t this project be done in emulation using non-XO machines? I
prefer to use XO machines so that I can test their capabilities and
limitations.
Why are you requesting the number of machines you are asking for? 5 to
30 seems a good number for a beginning class.
I will consider salvaged/rebuilt XO Laptops?
6. Sharing Deliverables
Project URL—where you’ll Blog specific ongoing progress:
Please web-publish this entire completed proposal, removing any
sections affecting your personal privacy. Ask if you want help —
communicating with our OLPC/Sugar global community is core!
How will you convey tentative ideas & results back to the OLPC/Sugar
community, prior to completion? I will send monthly reports on class
content and will send examples of projects they have completed.
How will the final fruits of your labor be distributed to children or
community members worldwide? I will publish a curriculum guide
describing the projects.
Will your work have any possible application or use outside our community?
I will attempt to publish my results on the internet.
Have you investigated working with nearby XO Lending Libraries or
Project Groups?
I will be working with the olpc club at UC Santa Barbara.
7. Quality/Mentoring
Would your Project benefit from Support, Documentation and/or Testing people?
I am not sure.
Teachers’ input into Usability?
Yes
How will you promote your work?
I will publish project descriptions and curriculum guides.
Can we help you with an experienced mentor from the OLPC/Sugar community? (Yes)
Someone who has worked with these laptops with students, with whom I
can discuss the capabilities and limitations of the XO laptops.
8. Timeline (Start to Finish)
Please include a Proposed timeline for your Project life-cycle: (this
can be in the form of Month 1, Month 2, etc rather than specific
dates)
Month 1. Work with 1 laptop to ascertain the capabilities
and limitations of the XO.
Month 2. Develop a curriculum overview.
Month 3. Introduce the XO to students during the summer session in July, 2011
Month 4 and 5- Monitor the use of the laptops during the
regular school term with a regular teacher.
Specify how you prefer to communicate your ongoing progress and obstacles!
Through the OLPC discussions and wikis.
[ ] I agree to pass on the laptop(s) to a local OLPC group or other
interested contributors in case I do not have need for the laptop(s)
anymore or in case my project progress stalls.
